Your knowledge of the Pel the furniture manufacturer has been a great read for me, thanks!
I’ve just purchased a Pel Bench 1.4 meter in length.
I’d love to send you a picture and wonder if you know of any other benches made by Pel. Thanks Bill

Thanks for your em. I can add – my recall of Pel co is scant, was there for 3 months as part of my training TI Group, think the co was next to the Oldbury canal or railway overbridge. I have no couch etc. The co would have probably made most of its tubular frames from ‘ERW’ tube: the cheapest process, from steel strip pulled thru a round die then welded along the join, albeit good ERW hardly has a visible line along it on the outer surface. Another co in the group making furn and its materials was Metal Sections Co, making and using extruded noncircularsteel , brandname Metsec, also in the Oldbury area; also TIStainlessTubes-normally aircraft, nuclear, etc but maybe also expensive furniture, also in that region.NB also Accles and Pollock who made everything tubular incl sports eqpt and chassis etc etc tube.
Good wishes, DB/Bill

I wonder if you’re aware of the book ‘PEL and Tubular Steel Furniture of the Thirties’ by Dennis Sharp,Tim Benton and Barbie Campbell Cole 1977, reprinted 1982, ISBN 090450302X. I have a copy, though I see that on Amazon it’s marked as unavailable. It contains a very good history of PEL and tubular steel furniture as well as three catalogues of their items with photos and specs. I am the proud owner of two SP2’s and two SP9’s. Chrome in original condition but three in need of re covering.

Hi Ralph, thanks for your email. Yes, I’m aware of Tim’s book which is an excellent guide to the subject. Glad to hear of your PEL chairs – out of interest what are your SP9’s covered in: rexine, leather or cloth? Michael

Hi Michael
Only just today noticed you’d replied to my post of 2019!1 If you’re still around, one SP9 has been reupholstered in black hide – looks very smart. Don’t know the original hide colour. The other SP9 and the two SP2s were originally green hide and had been re-coloured brown by previous owner. I plan to get them all recovered in black hide.
Best wishes from a fellow Deco enthusiast
