Hylda Court is a late 1930s block situated on a quiet street near Hampstead Heath. The architect is unknown but we stopped to admire the Crittall style windows and the balconies, especially the looping cantilevered ones of the inner courtyard. Many of the tenants have lived there for decades and who can blame them?

In 1936 there are three adverts in The Times (London) by Knight, Frank & Rutley for Hylda Court
19 March 1936 is text only (flats from £140 per annum)
9 April 1936 features an architects drawing (flats from £140 per annum)
14 May 1936 features a photograph of the building apparently finished (flats from £130 per annum)
This website gives the date of 1937 – please can you clarify what this is based on?
Is the architect known? It looks very similar to Stanbury Court, Haverstock Hill by Trehearne & Norman

Hi Peter, thanks for the info. Rather frustratingly, I can’t lay my hands on my source for the 1937 attribution. It was five years ago when I wrote the piece, which is quite brief as there is much published on the building, but from memory it was taken from an article online pertaining to some sort of spat with the freeholder (which may since have disappeared for this reason). As clearly it was around in 1936 thanks to the rental adverts you mention I’m happy to change it. If anything subsequently appears to confirm an even earlier date do let me know. best wishes, Michael

My grandparents,
Ernest and Hylda May King-Hall, were the original owners of Hylda Court, built on the site of their earlier house, the Hollies, and named for my grandmother.

How wonderful David! Do you have any old photos of your grandmother at Hylda Court?
